Title: Sony Unlocks 70MB Of Additional RAM For PS3
Posted: Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at 5:28 am

For those of you mostly unversed in the dark and mysterious realm of computer hardware configuration (like me), let me sum something up for you: more RAM is a good thing. So, then, its definitely a good thing that Sony have boosted the PS3s RAM available for games by 70 megabytes.

The latest PS3 firmware updates have slimmed down the console’s operating system, reducing the RAM needed for the OS from 120MB to 50MB, according to a report by PlayStation University.

SCEA’s Patrick Seybold later confirmed the changes to Joystiq: “Since the launch of the PS3, we have been continuously making efforts to reinforce our support system to game developers, allowing them to express their creativity freely on the PS3. As part of this support for game development, the size of the PS3 OS memory footprint has been reduced through network update for the game developers.”

Like I said, more memory is a good thing. 70MB of RAM is not a huge amount, but, according to a PS3 developer, it “might allow extra effects resolution or dynamic lights…” Mmmm, graphics….

Why was the RAM locked in the first place? It makes no sense to lock up something that's needed...

It wasn't really locked, it was just being used by the operating system. What they've done is reduce the amount of RAM needed to run the operating system, thereby freeing up that RAM to be used for games. Maybe a poor choice of words on my part.

So, the operating system has less memory needed to run on?
