Title: Modern Warfare 2 Top Seller In 2009 - No One Surprised
Posted: Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 7:09 pm

The NPD Group, GfK Chart-Track and Enterbrain have joined forces to combat evil – I mean, to release their top global markets report, which tracks software unit sales across the US, UK and Japan for 2009.

Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the top seller at retail for the year across those three regions, selling a whopping 11.82 million units, despite being released in November. Activision previously announced that Modern Warfare 2 had generated over $1 billion in sales, so this announcement should surprise absolutely no one.

Nintendo games rounded out the top five games for the year, with Wii Sports Resort selling 7.57 million copies, New Super Mario Bros. Wii selling 7.41 million, Wii Fit Plus shifting 5.8 million copies, and the original Wii Fit selling 5.44 million copies.

Despite these awfully big numbers, combining the sales figures from all three markets reveals an eight percent drop in overall software sales year-over-year. Don’t start panicking yet, though, as one of the big reasons for this decline is the slowdown of sales for the PS2. The now almost ten year old console saw a software sales drop of 56% in the US, 67% in the UK and 55% in Japan. Just for fun, did you know that the PS2 is also the first video game console to be involved in a nuclear weapons conspiracy? It’s true!

All I sold during 2009 was carbon dioxide molecules for an equal number of oxygen moecules. Not very profitable at all. Still, at least I'm not dead, and there are many good games that have been made for me to play. Funny thing is, I have not yet played any of the games you listed.

Actually Jon you sold 70 canbon dioxide molecules for every 30 oxygen molecules (sorry I'm a science nut)
