Title: Sony Working On Successor To Blu-ray?
Posted: Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 4:24 am
In an article in GameInformer magazine, it has been revealed that Sony may be working on the successor to Blu-ray technology, possibly to be used in the PlayStation 4.
While most developers still aren’t filling Blu-rays to capacity, and with the recently announced Blu-ray capacity upgrade, they probably won’t for a while, eventually devs will be wanting more space; something these rumoured discs reportedly have plenty of.
The discs are said to have a capacity of 6 terrabytes (TB), equivalent to 6000 gigabytes; more than enough space for…well, just about anything, including an abundance of 1080p HD video and/or 3D imagery. On top of that, the extra space would allow for more sophisticated copy protection systems to help fight piracy.
While this might seem excessive right now, there’s no doubt that the PS3 has plenty of life left in it, having only been on the market for a little over three years. By the time the PS4 rolls around, there might be a need for that much storage space.
