Title: Blu-ray Capacity Upgrade Announced
Posted: Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 7:50 pm
Blu-ray.com is reporting that a new technology has been developed to expand the storage space on Blu-ray discs by 33 percent.
The technology, which was developed by Sony and Panasonic, allows the individual layer storage on the discs to be increased from 25GB to 33.4GB. It is also believed that existing Blu-ray players (presumably including the PS3) would be able to play these new higher capacity discs with a simple firmware upgrade.
The two companies have also developed i-MLSE (Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation) evaluation index, which allows players to evaluate the genuineness of these higher capacity Blu-ray discs.
This could potentially be very good news for developers. Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has already complained that there isn’t enough space on standard Blu-ray discs, and Naughty Dog reportedly used all of the available space in developed Uncharted 2, so more space can only be a good thing.
